Controlling boyfriend told girlfriend 'I'll kill you' in furious drunken rage

A controlling boyfriend who subjected his partner to a year and a half of rages and insults was spared jail today.

Greg Todd, 21, ranted drunkenly at Iona McLauchlan, 20, in front of her father and told her she deserved to die before storming off from her home in the Bantaskin area of Falkirk.

She went to find him by car, but when he got in he flew into "a fit of rage", Falkirk Sheriff Court was told.

Prosecutor James Moncrieff said: "He was screaming and shouting at her saying, 'you're a c***, I hate you and I'll kill you'."

That incident happened in July or August 2019.

Mr Moncrieff said there was then a further incident in October 2019, when Miss McLauchlan had been on a night out with a friend and then got a taxi back to Todd's address.

Mr Moncrieff said: "She arrived to find him waiting outside in the street for her."

After the taxi stopped, he began shouting at her, "S***, s***," and "You're dead to me" and forcibly grabbed her by the arm.

A further incident occurred after Miss McLauchlan collected Todd from a pub.

Miss McLauchlan was driving, there was a friend in the front passenger seat, and Todd was in the rear.

Mr Moncrieff said: "He became irate and aggressive, slamming his hand off the window and again calling her a s*** and a 'slag', then leaned into the front of the vehicle and threw his phone into the front where it bounced off the dashboard, placing her in fear and alarm."

As a result of the last incident, their relationship ended, and Miss McLauchlan went to the police.

Todd, a joiner, of pleaded guilty to engaging in a course of behaviour which was abusive of Miss McLauchlan, his partner or ex-partner, contrary the Scottish Parliament's 2018 domestic abuse laws, over a period of a year and a half between June 2019 and September 2020.

Solicitor Lynn Swan, defending, said: "The relationship has been finished for some time. He has no intention of getting back in contact with her. He has moved on, he is in a new relationship, and has learned lessons from the relationship he had with this complainer."

Sheriff Simon Collins QC placed Todd on social work supervision for 12 months, with a condition he attend alcohol and drugs counselling.

He was also ordered to carry out 135 hours of unpaid work, and made subject to a non harassment order requiring him to stay away from Miss McLauchlan.

The sheriff said: "These were repeated incident of abusive behaviour, and/or controlling behaviour, over a significant period of time."
