Controlled explosion carried out after hand grenade discovered at Royal Canal

An Army bomb disposal team carried out a controlled explosion after a historical hand grenade was discovered at the Royal Canal this afternoon.

Emergency services raced to the scene after the device was discovered between Cross Guns Bridge and Broombridge at around 2pm.

The area was sealed off by gardai while the Army EOD team made the grenade safe.

A garda spokeswoman told Dublin Live investigations into the incident are ongoing.

She said: "Gardai in Mountjoy were alerted to an incident on the canal between Cross Guns Bridge and Broombridge where a historical hand grenade was discovered early this afternoon, Saturday 8th February, 2020.

"EOD were called to the incident and the scene was sealed off.

"A controlled explosion took place and investigations are ongoing."
