Controlled explosion at Ellesmere Port school after 'hazardous substance' found

The bomb squad were called to an Ellesmere Port school after the discovery of a "hazardous substance."

Cheshire Police were immediately informed after the Ellesmere Port C of E College discovered the substance on their property on Tuesday (January 5), reports Cheshire Live.

The EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) team attended the Ellesmere Port school, which did not have any students on campus at the time, and following an assessment, carried out the controlled detonation yesterday morning (Wednesday)

EP College's Head of Science Mr Loon was given the honour of pressing the button to set off the explosion.

A spokesperson from Cheshire Police said: "Shortly after 4.00pm on Tuesday January 5 officers from Cheshire Police received reports that a hazardous substance had been found at a higher education facility in Ellesmere Port.

"The substance was not suspicious, but as a precautionary measure a decision was taken by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) to conduct a controlled explosion.

"The explosion was managed by the EOD and took place shortly after 9am on Wednesday January 6."
