Contrite Solomona determined to fight for England spot

(Reuters) - Sale Sharks winger Denny Solomona is ready to fight for his place in the England squad after being sent home from a pre-season training camp for disciplinary reasons.

Solomona and centre Manu Tuilagi were banished from the national gathering in London earlier this month due to what England Rugby termed as 'team culture issues' with media reports suggesting they had indulged in a drunken night out.

"What happened was out of character. It was definitely a mistake on my behalf. I'll work harder to get back," Solomona, who scored a sensational match-winning try against Argentina on his England debut in June, told reporters.

"I'm hungry for it. I'm eager for it and I'm only going to train harder and play as good as I can to let my rugby do my talking.

"I'll improve my game capabilities and I'll learn a lot more. And in the game I'll go as hard as I can and give everything I've got every single game."

Sale director of rugby Steve Diamond believes the disciplinary matter had been dealt with by England and was backing the 23-year-old Solomona to add to his two caps for Eddie Jones's side in the autumn internationals.

"When you're representing England you've got to keep your guard up, you can't afford to make those errors," Diamond said.

"Eddie's one of the best coaches in the world and he knows what young lads get up to some of the time. A rap on the knuckles goes a long way."

Sale open their Premiership campaign against Wasps on Sept. 2, while England are next in action when they host Argentina, Australia and Samoa at Twickenham in November.
