Contractors forgot to open ring road slip road - adding to traffic chaos

South Gloucestershire Council has apologised after the slip road at a busy roundabout near the M32 failed to be reopened following a night time closure, adding to traffic chaos across the city.

A number of incidents contributed to the heavy traffic across Bristol on Thursday morning (September 12).

A crash on the A4174 ring road sparked long delays in the area, while an emergency service incident also saw roads closed in the city centre.

As well as hold-ups in and around the city centre, there was congestion on the M4 and M32 motorways.

First Bus apologised for the delays while many commuters vented their frustration on Twitter.

But it turns out that some of the congestion could have been avoided if contractors working to resurface Abbeywood roundabout near Filton had removed all the road closures that had been in place overnight as planned.

Work to resurface the roundabout has been taking place since Monday (September 9) with overnight closures planned for two weeks.

But on Thursday morning one of the slip roads was not reopened adding to gridlock in the area.

A South Gloucestershire Council spokesperson has apologised to those affected by the delays.

In a post on Facebook the authority said: “We are currently working on a scheme to resurface the roundabout at Abbeywood and have overnight lane closures in place until 24 September.

“Unfortunately, one of the slip roads onto the roundabout was not reopened as it should have been ahead of the morning rush hour [on Thursday].

“There was also a collision on Westerleigh Road near the Bristol and Bath Science Park this morning.

“These incidents resulted in very heavy traffic throughout the area and caused considerable delays.

“Our contractor is aware of the problems [on Thursday] morning and will keep the slip road open during the day when works are not being carried out.

“We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused.”
