Contract pay off could be Yoshinori Muto's only chance of Newcastle United exit

Yoshinori Muto is back in training with Newcastle United and could have to come to a financial agreement with the Magpies if he is to make a move to Greece.

The £54,000 per week striker is working with the club to find what Steve Bruce described as "a solution" to his predicament after learning he is not part of United's plans.

But he will need to agree a settlement with the Magpies if he is to be released from his lucrative deal.

The Japan striker has been the subject of interest from Greek side Aris Salonika but Chronicle Live understands that the Super League side can only afford to do any type of deal on a free transfer.

Another option would be for Muto to find a club on loan, but Newcastle would want any bidding clubs to pay the majority of his wage packet as his contract expires at the end of the season.

Muto spent last season on loan at Eibar, who were relegated from La Liga, but the Spanish club aren't in a position to revisit the deal.

Whether Muto features at Rotherham United's New York Stadium remains to be seen but Bruce is set to be bolstered by the return of goalkeepers Freddie Woodman and Mark Gillespie who have completed their periods of self-isolation.

Karl Darlow was still recovering from Covid after spending time in hospital.
