Contract extension still a possibility for Broncos CB Chris Harris

The NFL’s trade deadline has passed and Chris Harris is still on the Broncos’ roster, which means he’ll remain with the team for at least the next eight games. Beyond that, Harris’ future is uncertain.

“Definitely relieved and happy to be able to finish the year here,” Harris said Wednesday. “That’s what I wanted. That was the goal at the beginning of the year to finish the year here and see what happens at the end of the year.”

Harris is set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2020.

Denver’s front office might be hesitant to give a big-money contract extension to a cornerback who will turn 31 years old next summer. Harris is a great tackler, though, so a move to safety might be in his future — similar to the transition Kareem Jackson made.

Knowing that Harris’ productivity could be extended by a position change down the road, the Broncos should seriously consider re-signing him in 2020.

“He’s a versatile player,” Denver coach Vic Fangio said Wednesday. “He’s smart. He can obviously play corner or nickel. He’s strictly been a corner for us for the most part because of where we’re at [with injuries]. He’s versatile, smart and can cover. He’s what you want in a DB.”

Broncos general manager John Elway told the team’s official website this week that he’ll “see if we can get something done” with Harris after the season, according to The Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala. Elway made similar comments during his appearance on KOA Radio this week.

“To know that they want me to be here, that’s big for me,” Harris said. “As a player, you always want to feel appreciated and you want to feel like the work that you put on the field is noted and appreciated.”

Harris has totaled 22 tackles and one interception through eight games.
