'Contract extension next' - Arsenal fans respond as Aubameyang replaces Xhaka as new captain

Arsenal fans have been reacting on social media after Unai Emery confirmed that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has replaced Granit Xhaka as captain.

Xhaka was left out of the Gunners' squad to face Wolves and also Vitoria on Wednesday after the midfielder's altercation with supporters during the Crystal Palace game last weekend.

Some fans cheered his substitution but those cheers swiftly turned to boos as Xhaka decided to stroll off instead of racing off and he responded by cupping his ear towards the fans before taking his shirt and storming straight down the tunnel.

Xhaka did offer an apology to fans for his actions with a lengthy social media post last week, but ahead of the Vitoria clash, Emery told the Swiss midfielder he was no longer part of the club's captaincy group and refused to answer more questions about the situation.

"We’re speaking a lot about that. It’s clear. There’s no more words about that.

“I told him and told the other captains. Then the time is giving us the next weeks and months, how we can continue with every player.”

With the armband taken off Xhaka, Emery confirmed that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been named as the new permanent captain.

And taking to social media, the majority of Arsenal supporters believe the striker is the right man for the job.
