Contract diver dies while inspecting Nova Scotia Power tidal station

ANNAPOLIS ROYAL, N.S. — Police in Nova Scotia say a diver has died while conducting an inspection at a Nova Scotia Power tidal station.

Annapolis Royal Police Chief Burt McNeil says the contract diver was doing an inspection of a set of gates at the Annapolis Tidal Station when he lost contact with the surface team around 1 p.m.

McNeil says the diver became entangled, but it was not clear on what.

He says a standby diver went down and untangled the 39-year-old man, who was an experienced diver from the Halifax area.

McNeil says emergency responders worked on the man for some time, but he was declared dead around 3 p.m.

An autopsy will be performed Thursday.

McNeil says the investigation has been turned over to the provincial Labour Department.
