Contract details revealed for Oregon coach Dan Lanning

The Oregon Ducks have given Georgia Bulldogs defensive coordinator Dan Lanning a big raise to be the Ducks’ next head coach. Lanning is slated to make $29.1M over a six-year contract. Lanning’s annual earnings start at $4.6M per year and increases by $100,000 per year.

Georgia could not offer that sort of money for Lanning to remain as the Dawgs’ defensive coordinator. Lanning’s contract is modest compared to some of the other contracts college football coaches have signed this offseason.

Lanning has additional incentives in his contract that range from $25,000-500,000.

Defensive analyst Will Muschamp and inside linebackers coach Glenn Schumann will takeover as co-defensive coordinators next year following Lanning’s departure.

Dan Lanning will remain on the UGA staff as he coaches his defense through the remainder of the College Football Playoff. UGA plays Michigan in the Orange Bowl for a spot in the national championship on Dec. 31 in Miami.

Lanning’s first career game as Oregon coach in 2022 will be against Georgia in Atlanta.

Dan Lanning, who is only 35 and is the youngest head coach in Oregon history, has served on the UGA staff since 2018. Lanning started his Georgia career as as outside linebackers coach, but was quickly promoted to defensive coordinator in 2019.

Lanning has coached some of the top-ranked defenses in the country during his career with Georgia. His defenses have been particularly stout against the run. Lanning’s defense has been historically good this year.
