Contract details for new Chiefs OL Mike Remmers

The Kansas City Chiefs recently added versatile offensive lineman Mike Remmers to the team on a one-year deal.

Remmers comes from the New York Giants where he started 14 games during the 2019 season. His contract with the Chiefs suggests that he’ll be willing to take on a new role as a reserve player. He signed a veteran minimum contract with Kansas City, determined by his accrued years, which is very affordable for the team.

Here’s a look at the base salary, signing bonus and cap numbers courtesy of OverTheCap:

Year Base Salary Signing Bonus Cap Hit Dead Cap
2020 $1,050,000 $137,500 $750,000 $887,500

The latest estimation by OverTheCap puts the Chiefs at just $112K in salary-cap space. That number currently doesn’t include the free-agent contract for QB Jordan Ta’amu and the re-signings of Mike Pennel and Anthony Sherman. It’s likely that Brett Veach has done some procedural moves to create cap space that we don’t yet know of yet.

The best thing about Remmers’ contract is that he won’t qualify for the compensatory pick formula. That means the Chiefs still keep the two draft picks they’re projected to gain in 2021 from qualifying free agents Kendall Fuller and Emmanuel Ogbah.
