Contract details for Cardinals S Charles Washington

One of the many players the Arizona Cardinals have re-signed is safety and special teamer Charles Washington. A fixture on the roster for the last two seasons, Washington is on a one-year deal for the second season in a row.

For the second year in a row, the Cardinals will pay him the league minimum. However, unlike last year’s contract, he gets a signing bonus and can earn another bonus for making the team.

The Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson shared the details of the contract on Twitter.

He will make $990,000 in salary in 2021, which is the minimum for someone with between 4-6 credited seasons. He receives a signing bonus of $68,750 and also will get a bonus of the same amount if he is on the Week 1 roster — a total of $137,000.

None of his salary is guaranteed.

Because of how the contract is structured, according to Spotrac, his contract gets a veteran exemption against the salary cap. While he will get more than $1.12 million in cash if he makes the team, his cap hit is only $987,500, a savings of nearly $140,000 in cap space for the contract.

If he doesn’t make the team, his deal will only have $68,750 in dead money against the cap.
