Contract awarded for £90m Glasgow University learning hub

SES Engineering Services has been appointed by main contractor Multiplex Construction Europe to to work on a new £90 million learning hub for the University of Glasgow.

The seven storey 16,640 square metre new build learning hub will be named after James McCune Smith, the American physician who graduated in 1837 as the first African-American to receive a medical degree.

Designed by architects HLM, the learning hub is a key part of the the university's £1 billion investment in its Campus Development Programme.

Catering for more than 2,500 students, the new building will feature flexible open learning space and technology-enabled teaching resources and will include five lecture theatres, the largest of which will host up to 500 students.

It will also include interactive teaching spaces that can accommodate anything from 48 to 108 students as well as seminar and group study spaces.

Under the multi-million pound contract SES will install the full range of mechanical, electrical and public health services within the building.

SES business director North and Scotland Steve Joyce said: “SES is delighted to be given this opportunity to work with Multiplex on a building which marks the start of such programme of investment for the University of Glasgow.

“I am confident that this will pave the way for SES to work on future schemes as the campus development programme is rolled out.”

Construction of the teaching and learning facility is due for completion ahead of the 2020/2021 academic year.
