Continuity is key: Duncan Watmore delighted Sunderland stuck with Jack Ross

Duncan Watmore believes sticking with Jack Ross this season is the right thing for Sunderland, explaining the importance of continuity at a football club that's had very little of it in recent years.

Watmore is technically the longest serving first team player in the Black Cats squad following the departure of Lee Cattermole this week - making his first team debut 12 months prior to academy graduate and now club captain George Honeyman.

The former England U21 international knows better than most then the disruption caused to club over the years from constantly chopping and changing managers.

When Sunderland host Oxford on the opening day of the League One campaign, Ross will become the first Sunderland boss since Steve Bruce to start consecutive seasons in charge of the Stadium of Light outfit.

And Watmore believes that continuity and stability will help Sunderland as they look to achieve promotion back to the Championship.

"It's massive (to still have Jack Ross here at the club). That word continuity is big in football, but it quite often doesn't happen in football these days," Watmore told the club website.

"As we've experienced here for the past few years, it certainly hasn't happened.

"So it's really nice to have the same manager, the same backroom staff, and so many similar faces. All the players really enjoy working with the manager and the coaches and the other staff here.

"We're all just looking forward to the season and raring to go."
