Contempt case: High Court rejects IAS officer’s review petition

Justice B. Devanand of the Andhra Pradesh High Court rejected Special Chief Secretary (municipal administration and urban development) Y. Srilakshmi’s plea to discharge her from the contempt proceedings in the case related to the construction of ward and village secretariats and Rythu Bharosa Kendras (RBKs) on the premises of the government schools.

In her review petition, Ms. Srilakshmi submitted that she had taken charge of the present post on December 24, 2020, and was not aware of the court order dated June 11, 2020, until the receipt of the suo motu contempt order on July 12, 2021. However, on coming to know about the order, Ms. Srilakshmi claimed she had immediately ensured its compliance.

Upon her directions, the Director of Municipal Administration had issued instructions on March 17, 2022, that no construction should be allowed on the schools’ premises in order to maintain a healthy atmosphere in the schools. She, therefore, prayed for discharging her from the contempt proceedings.
