Galleries showcasing contemporary art have flourished throughout Bangkok over the last decade. This has led to the emergence of at least three festivals this year related to contemporary art named "Triennale", "Biennale" or "Biennial".
At this crucial juncture in the rapid growth and expansion of the art scene in Thailand, the Japan Foundation is holding a public talk and discussion on "Why Biennale/Triennale?" and "What's Contemporary Art?" at the Thailand Creative and Design Centre (TCDC) auditorium, Charoen Krung Road, on Saturday from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.
Held in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture's Office of Contemporary Art and Culture, the talk brings two eminent art professionals from Japan to examine these fundamental questions and provide a better understanding of the most up to date trends in Biennale/Triennale practices, as well as hot issues in contemporary art.
Fram Kitagawa, general director of Echigo-Tsumari Triennale and Setouchi Triennale, will discuss "The Trend In Japan's Bien/Triennale In The Last Decade And Its Future".
Yuko Hasegawa, artistic director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, and professor at the Graduate School of Global Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts, will look at "Ecology And Internet In Contemporary Art".
Fitting the talk into the context of the Thai art scene, Gridthiya Gaweewong, artistic director of Jim Thompson Art Center and international curator for Gwangju Biennale 2018, will act as moderator. The talk will be conducted in Japanese with Thai translation. There is no admission fee but advanced reservations are recommended.
