Contactless dining experience launched across thousands of restaurants - how it works

Take-away specialists Deliveroo have teamed up with local restaurants and national chains to launch a new "contactless" dining experience for those eating in.

The idea is to let people book, browse the menu, order, pay and even tip from their own phones, to cut down on the chances of spreading coronavirus.

Deliveroo chief executive Will Shu said: “Thousands of our restaurant partners stayed open during the lockdown to deliver for the NHS and the vulnerable.

"It is now time for the government, consumers, and for Deliveroo to deliver for our restaurants, helping them to survive on the high-street as they reopen for dine-in customers."

The move could allow restaurants to open again that otherwise would have to have remained shut.

That's because while big chains invest in single-use, biodegradable menus and in app purchases and bookings - something the Government recommend - smaller restaurants have struggled.

So Deliveroo stepped in, creating the new app function and letting restaurants use it with a 0% commission.

Deliveroo’s new service is also available to bars, cafes and pubs - or any outlet that offers table service to customers.

Shu said: “Deliveroo wants to play a significant role in helping restaurants adopt tech-led solutions to reopen safely, especially smaller partners who otherwise would be unable to develop the technology and face huge financial burdens due to COVID-19.

"We are committed to developing a wide package of support measures to help the sector’s economic recovery."

Deliveroo is also giving 25,000 items of in-store signs away free to small restaurants to help with social distancing - including floor stickers, so customers know to keep a safe distance when they are inside, as well as anti-bacterial pumps, hand washing signs and bag seal stickers.

PPE has also been made available at cost price for restaurant staff - including masks, hand sanitisers and disposable gloves.
