‘Contact Lenses Are A Life Saver’: Writer & Designer Michael Sun On Balancing It All
Let’s be real: growing up is insane.
As we mature, the ability to adapt becomes more and more essential to navigating life, shifting between the different hats (or eyewear) we need to juggle.
Balancing work and play can sometimes feel like playing with knives; there’s a certain anxiety attached when switching between these different personas.
Michael Sun, Australian-Chinese writer and designer, seems to have code-switching all figured out. His creative mind is in expert mode when it comes to doing it all: seamlessly moving between writing, design, and his newfound passion — cooking and hosting.
As someone trying to crack the code for themselves, I sat down with Michael to pick his brain on how exactly he blends his newfound passions with what pays the bills.
Transferring skills from work to play
Being a creative calls for mental gymnastics. Whether it’s a personal project or a new client, you’re constantly having to switch between different mediums, personas and perspectives.
There’s something new every day — and this is what draws Sun to it the most.
Sun joyfully admits to “want[ing] to try everything at any given second,” which is a statement that most creatives would resonate with.
“I am so bad at focusing, and I need to be switching between different creative interests all the time before my brain short-circuits.”
Engaging with so many things at once makes room for new skills and hobbies to embrace along the way.
Aside from being a multi-hyphenate creative, Sun has permanently added a new role to his plethora of qualifications: being a host with the absolute most.
“One of my passions lately has been hosting for my friends and family.”
Bringing his creative genius to the kitchen, Sun has taken to the kitchen like a moth to the flame, whipping up delicious dishes for his friends and family that also catch the eye (you can thank his design skillset for that).
In other words, he’s unleashed a different type of creativity that continues to push his mind beyond the borders of his work computer.
Harnessing the skills of his profession, Sun’s kitchen definitely seems to be creating a unique flavour, and dare I say, an absolute vibe.
Watching that 9-5 become your 5-9 (through your contact lenses)
Finding out what works for you is at the core of Sun’s creative process. Trial and error is truly the key to fully fleshing out those creative muscles. Sometimes, it’s all about looking at things through a different lens.
“It’s okay to switch gears once in a while,” says Sun, who trades his glasses at work for his Specsavers easyvision contact lenses in the kitchen.
Curious as to whether transitioning from creating to hosting after a busy workday is jarring, Sun points out that these “two outlets are surprisingly complementary,” revealing how transitioning between his eyewear is what actually helps him to step into each role.
This transformation is akin to Clark Kent transforming into Superman, where Sun reveals how switching to his Specsavers easyvision contact lenses is like a superpower in the kitchen, helping shift his mindset from work mode to compère. Perhaps contact lenses are the secret ingredient to cooking a good meal, after all.
Although Sun “love[s] wearing glasses while working,” because they make him feel like a ‘real writer’, he points out that “contact lenses are a lifesaver in the kitchen,” helping him to prepare for his cooking and hosting antics.
“Contact lenses mean I don’t have to worry about my glasses breaking or getting dirty. […] They make my life easier and cleaner — and probably safer too. I live life like a slapstick victim, so I am constantly tripping over and spilling things on myself”
“Anyone who has cooked with glasses on has experienced the utter humiliation of fogged-up lenses,” Sun states as he recalls a hilarious cooking incident he suffered before making the switch to contacts.
“One time I dropped my glasses into a freshly folded mousse, and I do not want to repeat the experience. I still served the mousse though — not sorry.”
Although I’m sure the mousse was incredible, I think I’ll stick to glass-free desserts. All that being said, it sounds like contacts in the kitchen are the way to go.
The life of a creator, made easy
Whether you’re a writer-designer extraordinaire, a whiz in the kitchen, or the life of the party (or all three in Sun’s case), there’s an eyewear solution for you that helps to navigate the many hats that you wear from day to day.
If you’re looking to avoid fogged-up oven lenses and frame-flavoured mousse, contact lenses might just be for you.
You can book a free contact consultation at your local Specsavers by booking online or in-store. After an epic contact-coaching sesh with the Specsavers team, they’ll even throw in a free pack to try at home, so you can discover which version of yourself they work best for.
Cheers to living life as your best creative self — and being able to see in the process.
