Construction worker dies after suffering head injury at hospital site in Aberdeen

A man has died while working on the construction of a new hospital in Aberdeen.

The tragedy unfolded shortly after 9.30am on Wednesday, January 18 when officers were alerted to a 52-year-old man having injured himself at the site of the new Baird Family Hospital in the city's Foresterhill.

Emergency services, including Police Scotland and Scottish Ambulance Service, raced to the scene but despite efforts to save him, the man was pronounced dead.

Construction company Graham, which is currently leading the building of the facility, confirmed the incident involved one of their sub-contractors and that work has been paused for the time being.

The Health and Safety Executive has also launched an investigation and the matter has been reported to the procurator fiscal.

A Graham spokesperson: “We are deeply saddened to confirm a fatality at the Foresterhill Health Campus in Aberdeen on Wednesday 18th January.

"We are in discussions with the sub-contractor involved, as well as the emergency services and the Health and Safety Executive and we have paused all related work.

"We will fully cooperate with any investigation. Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased and we will support our colleagues as best we can at this difficult time.”

A HSE spokesperson added: “HSE is aware of the incident. We are currently liaising with Police Scotland and will be investigating alongside them.”

The Baird Family Hospital is due to open next March following a two-year delay. It will replace Aberdeen Maternity Hospital, which is due for demolition next August. The project has been in the works since 2014.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 9.40am on Wednesday, January 18, we were called to a report of a man being injured at Foresterhill Health Campus, Aberdeen.

“Emergency services attended and a 52-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The Health and Safety Executive has been informed. A reported will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”

NHS Grampian has been approached for a comment.
