Construction work on power line under review due to Government coronavirus guidelines

Work on the construction of a major new power line between Avonmouth and Bridgwater is being reviewed following Government guidance during the coronavirus outbreak,

National Grid started work on the new 37-mile power line, which will cross large swathes of the North Somerset countryside, earlier this year.

The 400,000 volt line is needed to bring electricity onto the transmission network and is being built as part of the new Hinkley C power station.

Most of the new line will go overground using T-pylons but some sections in sensitive areas will be buried underground.

Work has been carried out in North Somerset to create access roads as part of the project.

A series of road closures and traffic measures are currently in place across parts of North Somerset, including in Nailsea, Tickenham and Portishead.

But following a Government decision for the UK to go into lockdown – with strict rules on who can continue to work during the outbreak – construction on the project is being reviewed.

Current government advice is that work on construction sites can continue as long as people are 2m (6.5ft) apart.

A spokesman for National Grid said: “Activity is being reviewed on Hinkley, while we and contractors look at what stages of the project are critical and can continue safely within government guidelines.

“The construction areas are being maintained and secured.

“The programme is being constantly reviewed.”
