Construction underway on Oxford Instruments Plasma Technology's new facility in Bristol

Building work is underway on a new facility in Bristol which will house a subsidiary business of a FTSE 250 listed firm.

Plasma Technology is part of the Oxford Instruments Group, which designs and manufactures high-technology tools and systems for industry and research.

The business, which is currently based in Yatton, North Somerset, offers solutions to some of the world’s leading manufacturers of semiconductors, electrical components found in many consumer and industrial products.

It offers process tools and processes that allow for controllable and repeatable engineering of micro- and nano-structures.

Strong growth in the last four years has seen the company grow to more than 400 employees worldwide, with 300 of those based in Yatton.

Growing markets for fast-charging power devices used in products including electric vehicles, has prompted the company to expand its operations to its new 107,660 sq ft facility in Western Approach in Severn Beach.

The new premises, which is around 20 miles north of Plasma Technology's current site, will include laboratory, manufacturing and office facilities for staff.

Matt Kelly, managing director of Plasma Technology, said: “We are thrilled to be moving forward with construction at the new facility and we’re excited to see the project progress.

“Our new building will comprise both a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, as well as advanced research laboratories which will support our leading-edge developments and enable the future innovations of our customers."

In February, the company announced plans to move to the new facility, with Mr Kelly saying: "We took the decision to keep our manufacturing and R&D facilities in the Bristol area, for several reasons.

"Our employees are of utmost importance to us and limited disruption to their current work/home life balance was key. We are also passionate about our involvement in and support of the local economy and want to maintain our contribution here.

"As we grow further, we will continue to provide additional employment opportunities in the Bristol and West Country tech cluster."

Construction for the project, which is being managed by Birmingham-based Trebor Developments, is due to practically complete this year, with the facility set to be operational by summer 2022.

Oxford Instruments was founded in 1959 and became the first substantial commercial spin-out company from the University of Oxford.

It has helped to develop a range of technologies used in areas including magnetic field environments, X-ray, laser and optical based metrology.
