Construction underway on new nurseries in Coltness, Netherton and Newmains

Construction work is under way on three new nurseries in Coltness, Netherton and Newmains, which are expected to open in August.

Councillor Frank McNally, convener of the North Lanarkshire Council’s Education and Families Committee, was joined by councillors and nursery staff to mark the start of work with a turf cutting ceremony at Innerleithen Family Learning Centre in Coltness.

Named by local children and families after the street it’s located in, the centre will provide Early Learning and Childcare for 72 children in each morning and afternoon session. All children will also receive lunch.

The site has a wooded area which will be included as part of the outdoor play area.

It is one of nine new facilities being built by the council to accommodate the increase in nursery provision for three to five year olds from 600 to 1140 hours a year.

Work is also underway on Netherton Family Learning Centre and Abernethyn Family Learning Centre in Newmains.

Councillor Frank McNally said: “Our ambition is to offer children the best start in life, and new facilities like this will provide first class Early Learning and Childcare for local families.

“Where possible we choose sites close to natural environments to ensure freedom and space for physical activity to support outdoor learning.”
