A construction site where a father and son fell to their deaths is currently closed.

David and Clayton Bottomley died after an industrial accident at the Unity Building on Chapel Street.

David Bottomley 53, died at the scene on May 17. His son Clayton, 17, died in hospital on May 23.

A joint investigation between the Health and Safety Executive and Merseyside Police was launched after the accident.

The ECHO can now confirm the Unity Building site has been closed.

A police spokesman said: "The site remains closed and joint investigation between Merseyside Police and HSE remains ongoing."

A spokesperson for lead contractors Laing O’Rourke said: “We have temporarily suspended work at the site to allow the investigation to proceed. We and our sub-contractors are cooperating with the HSE as it investigates this tragic accident.”

David and Clayton, from Knottingley in West Yorkshire, had been described as "inseparable" and like "peas in a pod" by a close friend.

Clayton was a former Rugby League prodigy who once played for Eastmoor Dragons ARLFC and and later Castleford Tigers.

In a poignant Facebook post, Eastmoor Dragons ARLFC paid tribute to Clayton, describing him as a "truly terrific player, with the heart of a lion".

A family friend spoke to the ECHO earlier today. The man, who asked not to be named, said: "The family have struggled over the past month.

"I understand they have not been told anymore about the nature of the accident. All they know is that an investigation is underway."

Last month the friend told the ECHO that the Bottomley family had been touched and moved by messages of support from the Liverpool area after the accident.

Tributes and flowers were left at the scene last month, including teddy bears, beer bottles and personal messages from local businesses.

David, a life-long Leeds United fan, was an experienced insulation fitter. Clayton started working for his dad after picking up injuries playing rugby, a friend said.

Last month Laing O’Rourke released a statement to the ECHO which read: "Our Health and Safety team is at the site and we and our sub-contractors will cooperate fully with the investigation into what happened. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the men at this extremely difficult time.”
