Construction of new Salisbury homes starts with plans for 640 properties

Work has started on a site in Wiltshire where as many as 640 new homes could be built.

Housebuilder Vistry Group said construction of the first phase of the Wilton Gate development - located in Harnham, near Salisbury - is now underway.

The FTSE-250 firm, which builds properties for the Bovis and Linden brands, has already secured planning permission for 234 properties on the site off Netherhampton Road, with more planned.

Vistry, which includes Countryside Partnerships, will be delivering 148 homes in partnership with housing association Aster Group. The company said the new neighbourhood would include properties classified as 'affordable rental' and available through shared ownership.

As well as two to five bedroom homes, Vistry said the project could also provide a primary school, a local community centre, jobs and a country park. It added that the development would help contribute more than £14.5m towards local education, healthcare, transport and a new doctors’ surgery in central Salisbury.”

Vistry acquired the site for an undisclosed sum at the start of this year, with the company saying its interest in buying the land stretched back 10 years.

Emma Colin, managing director for Vistry’s Western region, said: “It’s very exciting to start work on this flagship development that will create high quality energy efficient homes for the local community. This collaborative project has been years in the planning, so it’s wonderful to see activity on site – with the first homes due for completion later this year – it’s a real milestone.”

Phil Farminer, managing director for Countryside Partnerships’ southern region, said: “We’re delighted to partner with Aster on this project, and to deliver a wide range of affordable homes within a fantastic location. We’re very proud that more than 40% of the whole development will be delivered as affordable homes with a range of tenure options.”
