Construction jobs rebound from pandemic lows

Nationwide construction employment is bouncing back from the worst of the pandemic.

Construction employment rose in all but a few U.S. metro areas in May compared April, according to the latest survey by the Associated General Contractors of America.

The greatest building sector employment gains in May were in Seattle (28,600) and New York City (25,000).

Dallas-Fort Worth construction jobs increased by an estimated 1,200 jobs in May from the previous month.

North Texas led the country in construction job growth in March, adding 10,000 building jobs before the pandemic hit.

The Houston area added 8,100 jobs.

Associated General Contractors' chief economist Ken Simonson said that construction employment expanded in most parts of the country between April and May as coronavirus lockdowns began to ease.

"The construction industry lost nearly 1 million jobs in April," Simonson said. "Construction employment has begun to bounce back in many parts of the country."

D-FW construction starts fell by 19% in May from a year earlier, according to the latest report from Dodge Data & Analytics. May's decline came on top of a larger decline in April.
