Construction giant embarks on key phase of £54m Wembley student apartments scheme

Construction giant Bowmer and Kirkland has embarked on a key phase of a £54 million project to build hundreds of student flats in Wembley.

The firm, which is headquartered in Heage, Derbyshire, is helping to build 678 apartments for the University College of Football Business (UCFB), which is based at Wembley Stadium, and Unite student living.

Named First Way Campus, the development, which is being led by Cole Waterhouse, will also include four floors of flexible office space and a new teaching campus for UCFB.

Work on the project start in September and now Bowmer and Kirkland has reached a key stage of the build, installing the first of 438 off-site manufactured modules.

The pre-manufactured modules, which make up the bedrooms, kitchens and corridors of the residential areas of the project, will continue to be lifted into place at a rate of six per day with the last modules being installed by January.

The scheme will also include flexible office space (Cole Waterhouse)

A 500-tonne mobile crane is being used from three different positions to lift the modules into place.

The modules have been built over the last 12 months by Caledonian, at its factory in Newark, Nottinghamshire

Matthew Cruttenden, regional director at Bowmer and Kirkland, said: “The installation of the first module follows a huge effort by the entire project team and is a real milestone and one which puts us firmly on target to deliver this exciting and modern facility for the UCFB and Unite students.”

According to Damian Flood, chief executive of Cole Waterhouse, the use of the modules will help the development achieve its completion date of July, 2020.

He said: “The modular design enables us to ensure swift installation and with off-site manufacture there is a reduction in snagging and a greater overall finish quality.

“Adhering to the term time completion date for First Way Campus is crucial and this route further reduces the risk of any delays.”
