Construction firm Bouygues to close Manchester and Birmingham offices amid ‘challenging market’

Construction group Bouygues UK is to close its Manchester and Birmingham offices, it has confirmed.

Bouygues UK is behind several major projects in Manchester and Birmingham, including 19-storey residential scheme The Green Rooms, as the main contractor for MediaCityUK's joint venture partners Peel L&P and Legal & General Capital.

In 2017, it was appointed to lead the £10m facelift of Centenary Square, outside the Library of Birmingham.

The group blamed a “challenging market” for its decision to cease operations carried out at its offices at One Didsbury Point, Manchester and Albert House, Quay Place in Birmingham.

A Bouygues spokesperson said: “Owing to a challenging construction market in the North and Midlands, we have decided to merge the Manchester and Birmingham operations of Bouygues UK with our offices in the South West and Wales.

“This will happen over time and existing projects in the Midlands and North West will continue unaffected through to completion.”

It is unknown how many jobs are at risk as a result of the office closures.

The group said it is “consulting with staff affected and will look to redeploy them to other roles where possible”.

Going forward, business development and support will be provided from its offices in Bristol and London, the group said.

Offices of Bouygues Group’s other companies in both regions - including Bouygues Energies & Services’ Manchester office - will be “unaffected” by the decision, it said.

The spokesperson added: “We will continue to target selected projects in these regions with repeat customers where we can add value.”
