Construction begins on new Edinburgh housing development despite congestion fears

Work has officially started on a controversial housing estate on the outskirts of Edinburgh, five years after the initial proposals were submitted to the council.

Taylor Wimpey are set to deliver 132 new homes at its Lauder Grove development, just off Glasgow Road in Ratho Station. After the plans were drawn up, locals initially hit out due to fears surrounding traffic congestion.

Despite objections, the development is set to include a range of modern and attractive two-bedroom apartments, as well as two, three, four and five-bedroom homes.

A quarter of the homes will be sold at an 'affordable price', which include one and two-bedroom apartments. Lauder Grove will also be built with sustainability and the environment in mind, balancing a reduction in private car parking spaces with the provision of two City Car Club spaces.

There will also be pedestrian access to Ratho Station in the form of a toucan crossing on the A8, and to local facilities that are situated across Ratho Station Park to the west and south of the development.

New footpaths and cycle routes will also enhance the overall appeal of the park and encourage more people to use it, while also ensuring the new community at Lauder Grove can connect with the surrounding existing local area and its amenities.

A secondary active travel access will also eventually be provided from Hillwood Rise for use by pedestrians, cyclists and scooter users, as well as allowing for emergency only access to the development.

Pauline Mills, Land and Planning Director at Taylor Wimpey East Scotland said: “We are very pleased to be starting our programme of construction work at Lauder Grove in Ratho Station, which further cements our commitment and investment within Edinburgh and the Lothians. As one of the largest housebuilders in the UK, we are committed to building more than homes and making sure that we add social, economic and environmental value to the wider communities that we operate in.

“As well as delivering an impressive choice of new homes for buyers regardless of where they are on the property ladder, our development at Lauder Grove will provide a range of community benefits including an investment in Ratho Station Park and the provision of affordable homes.”

Lauder Grove will also complement Taylor Wimpey’s nearby West Craigs development at Maybury, Edinburgh which has recently revealed two new show homes, as well as its choice of developments across the Lothians.
