Head of the Syrian regime Bashar al-Assad received on Thursday Chairman of Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Mojtaba Zonnour.
According to the official Syrian News Agency, SANA, the meeting tackled the latest regional developments.
Both sides affirmed their continued cooperation and coordination in combating terrorism until its elimination, which positively reflects on the regional security and stability.
They also discussed means of bolstering bilateral relations in various fields, mainly the economy.
“The most important element in the fight against terrorism is adhering to the principles that cannot be changed,” SANA quoted Assad as saying.
“Our struggle with our friends is continuous in the face of the ambitions of the West and its colonial states by hitting its agents and mercenaries who are being defeated in more than one place.”
Assad further noted that Damascus supports any efforts aimed at finding solutions for the current situation in Syria.
However, he stressed, attempts are underway to suggest that the solution to end this war could be given through the Constitutional Committee, but “this is not true.”
The war in Syria did not arise due to a disagreement or division over the constitution, he explained, adding that it started because there is terrorism that had begun with murder, intimidation and sabotage.
“The war ends only when terrorism ends,” Assad noted.
SANA also quoted Zonnour as saying that what brings Iran and Syria together is beyond tactical issues on ground.
“Both have one fate and an honorable common history,” the official said.
Assad suggested on Thursday that Turkish intelligence had killed the British key backer of the “White Helmets” in Istanbul, whose death is being treated as suicide.
James Le Mesurier’s body has been flown back to Britain from Istanbul after a preliminary post-mortem examination.
He was found dead on Monday outside the building where the Mayday Rescue Foundation was based along with his apartment. He had helped to set up and run the organization.
