Constant fly tipping making residents 'uneasy' and 'angry'

A woman has shared her anger over the constant dumping of rubbish in an entry near her house.

Chloe Charalambous, who lives by the entry near Whalley Avenue, St Helens, claims to have cleared the rubbish away several times in the past year, but people continue to dump it.

Chloe was inspired to begin cleaning the entry last year after it helped her with her grief following a miscarriage.

The 24-year-old told the ECHO: "I started cleaning the back of the entry to help me grieve for the loss of my son that I lost due to miscarriage.

"It seriously makes me feel so unaccomplished and and really uneasy when I see the entry full of rubbish."

The first time Chloe says she cleared the mess was over a year ago in July 2020.

In a Facebook post after this, she said people leaving litter show "no consideration at all."

A photo from last summer shows several large fridges dumped in the entry.

Another St. Helens resident commented on the post and said: "The fly tipping in this town is getting out of control and the sad thing is someone has probably paid for the waste to be removed thinking it's being disposed of legally."

Chloe also claims that her and her neighbours spoke to the council last year in an attempt to get something done to prevent the dumping of rubbish in the entry.

She told the ECHO: "I spoke to the council last year and my neighbours did, and they refused to get a skip, but we told them about it again and then they have given us a free skip to fill with rubbish"

A spokesperson for Torus Housing who manages the area said: “We have not received any recent reports of fly-tipping at this site. However, the Torus Neighbourhoods team regularly monitors the area and notify our caretakers if there is a need to remove accumulated waste.

"Now that we have been made aware rubbish has been fly-tipped on the site, we will make arrangements for its removal as soon as possible.

"Torus takes fly-tipping very seriously and we would encourage tenants and residents to report cases directly to us so that they can be investigated and addressed.”
