A person was shot dead by police in Uttar Pradesh’s Kasganj district, the police said on Wednesday morning, hours after bootleggers killed a constable and left a sub-inspector (SI) seriously injured.

Following a tip-off, the two policemen went to a village to serve warrant on a wanted criminal linked to an illegal liquor manufacturing unit.

They found brothers Moti and Elkaar and five to six others making illicit liquor, said police.

The accused persons surrounded the two policemen and started firing with the intent to kill them with illegal country-made pistols, said police. The accused persons also attacked the policemen with sticks and pikes. They fled with the SI’s service pistol and cartridges.

Elkaar was later shot dead in an alleged exchange of fire while the other accused managed to flee taking advantage of the dark, police said.

While SI Ashok Kumar, who was held hostage by the miscreants, was found in an injured condition by his colleagues, constable Devendra died due to assault, officials said.

The officer was seen carried by two colleagues from what appeared to be a field. The officer did not have his uniform on when found.

Kasganj District Magistrate (DM) Chandra Prakash Singh said the constable was killed when he and the SI had gone to Nagla Dheemar village in Sidhpura in search of a wanted criminal.

“The guilty won’t be spared,” the DM said.

Elkaar, who hailed from the same village, had four criminal cases against him, police said.

CM’s directive

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed the officials to take stern action against the culprits and book them under the National Security Act.

Kasganj Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar Sonkar said efforts were on to recover the police weapons looted by the accused. The SI was in a serious condition in Aligarh.
