Consortium encouraged as Newcastle United takeover campaign wins backing of first MP

The bid for takeover transparency has won the approval of an MP.

Last week's drive from the Newcastle Consortium Supporters Limited for the arbitration process between the Premier League and United to be made public - and the whole process to be more transparent - saw an email template for fans to send to their local members of parliament.

And the first backing has emerged on Monday after a fan shared his positive response on social media.

North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson, a Conservative, wrote in a reply to a United fan who had sent the NCSL's email calling for the arbitration hearing between Newcastle and the Premier League to be held in public.

He wrote: "I regularly meet and engage with the Premier League, the EFL and the sports minister - so I have already been feeding in on these vital issues following an earlier campaign email when the bid was first blocked.

"I absolutely support the need for transparency here, so fans can make an informed judgement.

"I also agree we need to be very mindful of the Big Six in any changes on TV rights / revenue - we do not want to become like the SPL where drama (for which Newcastle have had plenty of over the years) is removed - it would make the game stale.

"I will keep pressing my end."

The takeover has passed into the third phase of the elongated bid, with insiders now relying on legal machinations to break the deadlock.

Earlier attempts to go through the normal channels were rebuffed by the Premier League before a concerted effort to wield political pressure. There was a hope in September there was a change of direction and the deal would be given the green light but that passed, and now legal action is underway from Mike Ashley.

A consortium of fans are running their own separate action but admitted last week it was unlikely to succeed because lawyers were "delaying it". So they changed approach and looked to exert pressure via fans.

The NCSL - who have the backing of high-profile Newcastle fans Ant & Dec - retweeted the message with a reaffirmation of their core aim: "Transparency is a must and the NUFC case must be made public."

It remains to be seen how North East-based MPs react to the emails, which were launched on Thursday.
