Consolation win for India in Sudirman Cup

Already out of reckoning, India registered a consolation 4-1 victory against Australia in their last group C match of the Sudirman Cup team event in Suzhou, China, on Wednesday.

With nothing at stake, India rested PV Sindhu and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty, against a lower-ranked Australian team.

Mixed doubles team of Sai Prateek and Tanisha Crasto lost a close contest against Kenneth Zhe Hooi Choo and Gronya Somerville 21-17, 14-21, 18-21.

All other Indians defeated their rivals in straight games.

HS Prannoy thrashed Jack Yu 21-8, 21-8. In women’s singles, Anupama Upadyaya downed Tiffany Ho 21-16, 21-18. In men’s doubles, MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila had it easy against Ricky Tang and Rayne Wang 21-11, 21-12 and the women's pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto took 34 minutes to down Kaitlyn EA and Angela Yu 21-19, 21-13.

Malaysia and Chinese Taipei made it to the knockouts from group C. Malaysia defeated Taipei 4-1 on Wednesday to top the group. Former world No.1 Tai Tzu Ying recorded the only victory for Taipei. She beat Jin Wei Goh 21-8, 21-10.

The other teams which reached the knockout stage are China and Denmark from group A, Indonesia and Thailand from group B, Japan and South Korea from group D.
