Consett player Jake Orrell "fine" after sickening head injury during FA Vase final

Consett manager Terry Mitchell wants his side to learn from the mistakes they made in their FA Vase Final defeat against Hebburn Town.

The Ebac Northern League rivals produced a breathless 90 minutes as Wembley but Olly Martin’s late strike ensured Hebburn became the tenth North East club to experience success in the competition.

It could have all been so different for Consett after they twice took the lead with goals from Ali Alshabeeb and Dale Pearson.

However, the Hornets hit back with quickfire equalisers on both occasions and claimed the Vase thanks to a coolly taken goal from Martin with just five minutes left on the clock.

Mitchell admitted that his side may have paid for their naivety and hoped they will find a different way to manage going in front in future.

He said: “Typical, isn’t it?

“A football team’s always most vulnerable after they’ve just scored.

“Was it the naivety of our lads?

“It was two minutes the first time, three minutes on the second.

“We were only in the lead for about five minutes.

“I said maybe sometimes we overplay, we might just need to knock one out to settle the game.”

Mitchell issued an update on the welfare of Consett midfielder Jake Orrell.

The former Gateshead and Hartlepool United player suffered a serious head injury midway through the first-half and was taken to a local hospital as a precautionary measure.

“Jake is fine,” explained the Consett boss.

“The current protocol with head injuries, he’s only been out for a few seconds, so it’s all precautions.

“You’ve got to be so careful with head knocks – but I spoke to him when he came off on the stretcher.

“He said ‘I’m fine Terry’.”
