Conservatives in Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock left stunned by General Election exit poll

Counting is underway as ballot boxes arrive at Ayr's Citadel Centre in the General Election.

Conservatives, who are defending the Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock seat, have been left reeling by the exit poll which puts the SNP on 55 seats.

A senior party source declared the poll result as a "bolt from the blue".

But the Tories have received some good news by landing victory in the constituency's postal votes, according to senior SNP sources.

Also up for grabs at tonight's count is the seat of Central Ayrshire, where the SNP's Philippa Whitford bids to hold off the challenge of Tory candidate Derek Stillie and Labour's Louise McPhater.
