Conservative stronghold Hexham is divided on how to vote in the general election

Hexham has been a strong Conservative supporting area for as long as many residents can remember.

The town is one of the few safe Conservative seats in the North East – and has been held by the Tories since 1924.

But as the general election on December 12 looms, residents are now divided on how they will vote.

Michael from Hexham has voted for Labour all his life, but now his mind has been changed.

In this general election, he will be voting for the Liberal Democrats as feels strongly about remaining in the EU.

The 72-year-old said: "I hope that it will hopefully get cog running. Every year I vote Labour but I can’t trust Jeremy Corbyn, I’d rather be dead in a ditch than vote for him."

Holding a similar view regarding issues with trust with the leader of the opposition, Mary from Hexham is torn between voting Labour and Conservative.

The 87-year-old said: "I’m not sure whether I have faith that Corbyn can do what he says he will.

"He’s quite communist as I believe in a bit of capitalism as people have to right to have businesses and make money.

"And then we have Boris who walks around like Columbo but what I see him doing I actually like. I am very undecided."

Many residents feel like they can’t trust many politicians and have lost faith in their promises.

Local resident, Cathy Thirlaway, is refusing to vote as she feels that no party can be trusted.

She said: "I don't trust anyone. I really don't like Boris Johnson.

"I can’t trust any of them and that is why I won’t be voting."

However, some locals will remain loyal to the Conservatives and David Barns who has moved to Hexham five years ago is one of them.

The 69-year-old said: "I'm traditionally voting Conservatives and I would never consider voting for anyone else.

"I would never want Corbyn in charge and the Lib Dems are demons too."
