Conservative Party spring conference to be held in Newport next year

The Conservative Party spring conference will be held in Newport next year, the party has confirmed.

The party has confirmed the conference will take place in the city's International Convention Centre in the lead-up to Wales' Senedd election in May.

While the exact date is yet to be confirmed, it is expected that up to 8,000 delegates will attend the conference.

Newport Conservative Cllr Matthew Evans, and leader of the Conservative group in Newport, said the announcement was "welcome news" for the city.

"In the middle of the current pandemic this is very much welcome.

"It's the first time I can remember the Welsh conference coming to Newport, and with the capacity that the ICC has, as such a fantastic venue, it should be a great event."

Cllr Evans added: "With our main conference in October sadly being cancelled this will hopefully be a larger event, which will give the local economy a boost and hopefully bring significant benefits to the city.

"Hopefully there will be some major cabinet representatives in attendance, or perhaps even the Prime Minister, who often attends the spring forum.

"It will also be an opportunity for those selected for the parliamentary elections to field questions, debate and have a gathering of the minds."
