Conservative MS Nick Ramsay faces deselection battle

Monmouth Conservative MS Nick Ramsay is facing a deselection battle after more than 50 members of his local party signed a letter calling for a special meeting to discuss his future.

A letter to party members from Monmouth Conservative Association Nick Hackett-Pain said officers had been "in receipt of a petition signed by a large number of association members.

"This petition requests for a special general meeting of the association to be called to reconsider the adopting of the sitting member, Nick Ramsay as our prospective candidate for the Welsh Parliament (Senedd) election next year".

Mr Hackett-Pain said he was "duty-bound" to call a meeting due to the "large number of members petitioning".

The meeting is due to take place later this month.

Members could start a process leading to Mr Ramsay’s removal as a candidate.

Mr Ramsay, Member of the Senedd for Monmouth, said he was focused on the needs of his constituents.

Earlier this year the MS, who was first elected in 2007, was suspended from the party after he was arrested on New Year's Day.

Gwent Police issued a statement at the time which said: “We received a report of a disturbance at an address in Chepstow Road, Raglan on Wednesday January 1 at around 8.05pm.

“A 44-year-old man from the Raglan area was arrested following an incident but he has been released with no further action following investigation.”

After he took legal action, which included obtaining a temporary injunction against Senedd Tory leader Paul Davies, the Conservative group was forced to readmit him, and the party itself lifted the suspension against him later in the year.

Mr Ramsay, who chairs the public accounts committee at the Senedd, told BBC Wales: "I'm totally focussed on the needs of my constituents during this difficult time of the pandemic.

"I will be looking into the reasons behind Monmouth Conservative Association's decision to take this course of action and will be making a fuller statement over the next couple of days."

A Welsh Conservative spokeswoman said it was a matter for the association and that it would be inappropriate to comment.
