Conservative MP Nadine Dorries has been accused of thinking “all brown women look the same”.
The MP for Bedfordshire apologised after mixing up two British Aisan women, who both work in politics, in a Twitter post.
Ms Dorries said the mix-up was due to the two women’s accents.
In a now-deleted tweet, Ms Dorries posted a video of political journalist Ash Sarkar.
The tweet said Ms Sarkar "may be" the prospective candidate for Chingford and Woodford Green, but it was actually politician Faiza Shaheen.
Ms Shaheen responded by pointing out the mistake, adding: “When Tories think all brown women look the same”.
Along with Ms Shaheen, Ms Sarkar also commented on the tweet, saying: “Me and @faizashaheen are two different women, Nadine. You don’t see me out here mixing you up with any random white lady, so please pay me the same courtesy.”
Ms Dorries later apologised for the mistake.
Initially, Mr Sarkar asked for an apology from the Tory politican calling for her to “just say sorry”. Ms Dorries sent an apology to Newsbeat.
She said: “I wasn't sure. It was a tiny video on my small phone screen when I wrote it.
"I'm obviously really sorry if it caused any offence. I was just guessing really, hence my careful wording of the tweet as in 'may be'.
"It was the accent I was basing the identification on via my phone as I thought I recognised the voice and it sounded like Faiza."
