Conservative MP claims nearly £100 of Remembrance Day wreaths on expenses

A senior Conservative MP has been slammed for claiming nearly £100 worth of Remembrance Day wreaths on expenses.

Assistant Government Whip Jo Churchill put in the £92.50 claim last October.

Political Director of The Taxpayers’ Alliance James Roberts said: “No one in their right mind would dream of billing their boss for their Remembrance Day poppy. This petty practice has to stop.”

The database of MPs’ expenses shows that Ms Churchill made the claim under the description “summer tour”.

She joins Tory MPs Bill Grant and Rachel Maclean, who also claimed for wreaths during the most recent parliamentary session.

Sarah Adams, whose son James Prosser died aged 21 in Afghanistan after being blown up by the Taliban in 2009, said: “When will our greedy, notoriety-hungry politicians learn what sacrifices are made and start to make a few themselves?”

Ms Churchill said: “This error by a member of my staff was picked up immediately and the money was repaid.”
