Conservative Bolton MP asks government to reduce local Covid restrictions

The MP for Bolton West has written an open letter to Health Secretary Matt Hancock, asking for Bolton's hospital restrictions to be brought in line with the rest of the country.

Conservative MP Chris Green shared the letter on social media. Bolton's pubs and restaurants find themselves closed for a third week.

In the letter, Mr Green first questioned what exactly triggered the economic lockdown in the borough.

He wrote: "No official explanation has been given for why the positive test rate spiked in Bolton and I do not think anyone believes that it was just down to one group going on a pub crawl and I certainly would not accept an accusation that people, en masse, stopped following the guidance to wash their hands or observe social distancing.

"Having had time to assess the situation and draw conclusions from the data, what explanation can you give for the events that triggered our economic lockdown?

"The economic lockdown is having a terrible impact on pubs, cafes and restaurants and is pushing many to imminent and permanent closure, as well as causing anguish for their owners and employees who have worked hard for so many years."

Mr Green's constituency includes towns such as Horwich and Westhoughton, with both areas having relatively low case numbers compared to other parts of Bolton.

Speaking about the wider impact of the lockdown, he went on to ask why Bolton's restrictions are so "harsh" compared to other areas with a higher infection rate .

Mr Green continued: "The full and wider health impact of lockdown has yet to emerge, but we know that it is going to be awful and can be symbolised by the dramatic fall in GP referrals.

"During the period of the lockdown the number of referrals across Bolton has been cut by nearly 20,000 in comparison to this period last year. People have been frightened out of making or attending their appointment and this is going to have major health implications for many years to come.

"There has been a small increase in patients at Royal Bolton Hospital with Covid-19 symptoms, many of whom will have other serious medical conditions, but, with the extensive preparations already in place, we can be confident that we have protected the NHS.

"Increasingly, across Bolton, people see the impact of the lockdown policies and see that we have a far harsher regime than many other areas that have long since passed the 120/100,000 transmission level. Would you set out why it is right for Bolton to suffer an economic lockdown, but you have not imposed one on those many other areas that meet the same criteria?

"In the balance between the risk of remaining in an extreme lockdown and relaxing the rules, the conclusion I and many of my constituents have drawn is that we should reduce the restrictions now."
