Conor Washington volunteered to leave Hearts as he explains Tynecastle exit

Conor Washington has explained the reason behind his Hearts exit following his move to Charlton.

The Northern Irishman moved to the English side after a injury-riddled debut season at Tynecastle.

Supporters were gutted to see him leave as they felt he had shown some form before the campaign was curtailed in March.

The likes of Sean Clare, Callumn Morrison and Uche Ikpeazu have also departed Edinburgh in recent weeks as Robbie Neilson continues his rebuild.

And Washington has admitted he volunteered to leave with Hearts needing to trim the squad following their relegation to the Championship.

He said: "Boycie (Liam Boyce) was settled on a long-term deal and Naisy (Steven Naismith) was similar.

"Knowing I only had a year left on my contract, and given my age, I spoke to the manager and made it known that if there needed to be people leaving then I was happy to be one of them."
