Conor McMenamin injury explanation & Richard King St Mirren arrival timeline

St Mirren assistant manager Brian Kerr has revealed Conor McMenamin was left out of the friendly win over Dumbarton due to a minor injury.

The Northern Irish winger was present for the 4-0 victory but was not stripped for the fixture due to a small niggle.

McMenamin did travel with St Mirren for their pre-season training camp in Spain this week.

"He had a small niggle, nothing serious at all," said Kerr as he eased fears over an injury lay-off. "We just didn't want to risk him so early in the season.

"We know that [in Spain] we've got some games there, so it's important that we go out there and he's ready to start running. It's really early."

Similarly, Ryan Mullen was not thrown in for his debut for St Mirren - after his move from Renfrewshire rivals Greenock Morton - due to limited time with his new team-mates.

Kerr explained: "It was just really early, so he's not done a lot of work.

"So what we knew on Saturday was it was more important that he get a wee bit of work. Jamie worked him hard in the warm-up so he'll be ready for next week.

"We just knew that he needed the extensive work in terms of that, and the game time wasn't too important for him today.

"It was important that he got almost a little sort of mini pre-season just before the match, knowing that next week he'll up the levels to be involved in the games there."

Summer signing Richard King is not present in Spain with his new team-mates in Spain. The centre-back missed the training camp as he arrives in Scotland to settle into his new surroundings after a taxing period on international duty with Jamaica.

King joins St Mirren from homeland side Cavalier after a nominal fee was agreed to bring the defender to Paisley. There are high hopes for King to thrive in Scottish football and lead a pathway for Jamaican footballers after choosing a move to St Mirren over alternative destinations this summer.

"Richard's due to arrive in the country later this week so he’ll miss Spain," said Kerr.

"He’s got a few things to sort with his passport but that's basic things that we'll sort out next week. And then over the next two or three weeks, we'll talk about him.

"He's obviously played a lot of games over the last few weeks, so we're not concerned in any way, shape or form, about his fitness levels.

"It will just be getting him into our ways of doing things."

On potential incomings, Kerr added: "There’s potential to maybe add one or two more.

"It's up to the players here to answer some of the questions.

"In the performance against Dumbarton some of them have answered that. There are some young boys there, who have also done very well so they're given opportunities. A couple of them have done that as well with their performances.

"So the chances are there for these boys first, and if we feel that there needs to be one or two added, we'll look over the next couple of weeks. But first and foremost, it's up to the boys in the building to get the opportunity to stake a claim."
