Conor McManus adamant Monaghan will bounce back if 'strong decision' made

Conor McManus is adamant that Monaghan will bounce back from their qualifier heartbreak if a "strong decision" is made on Malachy O'Rourke's successor.

It is believed that the race for the Farney hot-seat is between Tony McEntee and Mattie McGleenan after Seamus McEnaney ruled himself out yesterday, and that a decision will be made later this month.

McManus himself will be returning after the eight-point qualifer loss to Armagh, but there may be some retirements from the panel - the 32-year-old is unsure if Vinny Corey and Dessie Mone will soldier on for another year.

But otherwise McManus believes Monaghan are far from the end of their journey, despite the loss of the long-serving O'Rourke, who guided them to two Ulster titles and last year's All-Ireland semi-final.

"We'll see what happens over the next couple of weeks," said the hugely influential forward.  "Whoever comes in, it's just a matter of trying to get the heads down and pick the thing back up again.

"It's been a disappointing year on our end. After getting to an All-Ireland semi-final last year, you were hoping to build on that.

"We were chasing points throughout the league and probably carried that (negative) momentum right throughout the championship.

"It's just about whoever is the best candidate for the job. Despite it being a poor year, I still feel that there's a strong panel there.

"Whoever that's going to be, I don't know. There are names floating about, but all we can do is let the powers that be decide who that is going to be.

"Hopefully they'll make a good strong decision, which I'm sure they will."

McManus is looking for a strong pre-season given Monaghan's early championship exit to enable the panel to hit the ground running in 2020.

He added: "It's not as if a manager is coming up needing to build the thing up or having to try to drag us out of Division 2 or 3 or whatever.

"We're in Division 1, which is ultimately where you want to be. So you're starting on a strong footing and it's about just getting the thing together again".
