Conor McHugh: Tributes to popular Dungannon man after sudden death

Tributes have been paid to a popular Dungannon man who died ‘tragically and unexpectedly’ this week.

Father of one Conor McHugh from the White City area of the Co Tyrone town passed away on Tuesday, with tributes describing him as ‘one of the good guys’.

Dungannon area Sinn Féin councillor Dominic Molloy said the McHugh family is well-known in the area and Conor's death has had a 'tragic' impact on those who knew him.

"It's very tragic news and so sad for the family," Cllr Molloy told MyTyrone.

"I'd like to send my sympathies to the wider McHugh family."

Conor, 31, had been supported by the Cedar Foundation following a brain injury to secure a place on a Youth Work degree, and a spokesperson for the organisation said he had a great passion for helping young people.

"Conor was a pleasure to support and was diligent and passionate about achieving his goal of working in Youth Work," Sinead McGrath from Cedar said.

"Conor was a gentleman, he was keen to work with Cedar to achieve his own goals and supported Cedar to work with others who were on their own journey with Acquired Brain Injury," service manager Sinead Drummond said.

"He was always keen to take part in any event which would raise awareness of brain Injury and the support available from organisations like Cedar. Cedar would like to extend their sincere condolences to Conor's family."

A local community group for the White City area in the town said it was a ‘heartbreaking’ loss for the community.

“So sad and heartbreaking to hear the news that Conor McHugh has passed away - everyone liked Conor and his personality endeared him to many,” White City, Dungannon said in a Facebook post.

“His love of Manchester United was infectious but his real happiness was being with his son.

“Conor was one of the 'good guys' he always had time for a chat and a bit of craic.

“Conor was a very kind man and would have done anything for people - he was in his element when his son was with him and he loved that lad to bits.

“Farewell Conor you were a decent man with so much more to give."

Conor was a former youth player for local GAA club Dungannon Clarkes, and the club offered their condolences to Conor’s family.

“The officers, committee, players and members of Dungannon Thomas Clarke G.F.C. deeply regret the death of our former youth player Conor McHugh and wish to offer to his wife Brogan, his son Aodhan, his parents Peter and Brenda, his sister Ciara, and brother Cainin and the entire family circle our deepest sympathy.”

A death notice from local funeral director Kate McAleer & Co said Conor was a ‘doting daddy’ to son Aodhan, and is survived by his wife Brogan, parents Peter and Brenda and siblings Ciara and Cianan.
