'Conor McGregor vs Frankie Edgar won't happen' says former MMA star

Conor McGregor's proposed UFC return against Frankie Edgar might never happen - according to former MMA star Chael Sonnen.

McGregor's trainer John Kavanagh last week suggested Edgar would be the perfect comeback opponent for his fighter.

And over the weekend Kavanagh , posted a picture of himself and McGregor with the caption: "Wait and see".

McGregor has not fought since he was choked out by lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov last October.

But while the former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion is expected to return to the Octagon late this year or in early 2020, Sonnen does not believe it will be against Edgar.

"I am very bearish on this,” Sonnen said on YouTube.

“I do not think this is going to happen but it has surprised me in that this is the one topic that still seems to be lingering around which I think is probably a very good sign for Frankie Edgar.”

Sonnen also pointed to the fact that Edgar recently announced he was going to move down to compete at bantamweight - two divisions below lightweight, the weight at which McGregor last competed.

"One thing Conor has done throughout his career is he's shown bravery. He's got guts, period.

"But to call out a guy who is two weight classes below you? It was a surprise. I thought it was weird. I didn't think it was going to go anywhere.

“Does that fight work? Sure, it works,” he added. “But it also throws a tremendous jam into things.

Frankie Edgar, pictured kicking Jose Aldo, needs to either lose 10 pounds or gain 10 pounds, says Sonnen (Getty)

"Frankie, are you going down to 135? If you are, now you’re going up to 155.

"Either one’s good. You’ve proven you can do it in either weight class. I’m in, but somebody needs to let Frankie know.

"Is he taking 10 pounds off or is he trying to put 10 pounds on? It just seems like things have slowed down a little bit.”
