Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier announced despite Irishman 'cancelling' fight

Conor McGregor WILL take on Dustin Poirier on July 10 despite claiming he was walking away from the trilogy.

The lightweight rivals will clash at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in front of a 20,000 capacity crowd at UFC 264.

The announcement, made by UFC president Dana White, comes days after McGregor threatened to find another opponent following a huge social media row with Poirier.

Poirier accused McGregor of walking away from his commitment to donate $500,000 to his rival's charity with the Dubliner claiming he was waiting to be told how the money would be spent.

McGregor then launched into a furious tirade and told Poirier he would be fighting someone else this summer.

But just 48 hours later, the third instalment of their rivalry has officially been announced as the headline act in Sin City.

White said: "This summer, Las Vegas is back open for business. And on July 10, UFC 264 will be at the T-Mobile Arena here in Vegas at 100 per cent capacity.

"Ladies and gentlemen, that's 20,000 fans - and this card will be headlined by the third fight between Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor."

McGregor will attempt to avenge his defeat by Poirier three months ago when he was stopped in the second round. That followed a first-round victory for McGregor in their first meeting in 2014.

Poirier was given the option of fighting for the vacant 155lb title next month but instead opted for the more lucrative trilogy fight with McGregor.

The winner is likely to be granted a shot at the belt which will be on the line on May 15 when Michael Chandler takes on Charles Oliveira.

McGregor has won just one fight in the UFC since 2016 - his 40-second KO of Donald Cerrone last year.

His defeat by bitter rival Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2018 preceded a long lay-off before his return against Cerrone.

The coronavirus crisis ensured he was sidelined for the rest of 2020 however before he was comprehensively beaten by Poirier.

His rival has also suffered a defeat by Nurmagomedov who finally gave up his belt last month having announced his retirement last October.
