Conor McGregor urged to retire from MMA after UFC 229 loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov

Conor McGregor should retire from mixed martial arts after his humiliating loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229, Derrick Lewis has said.

McGregor was soundly beaten by Nurmagomedov on Saturday night, comprehensively losing the first two rounds before tapping out in the fourth.

McGregor has already called for a rematch with defending lightweight champion Nurmagomedov, but Lewis thinks the Irishman has made enough money to call it a day.

When asked what McGregor should do next at the UFC post-fight press conference, Lewis replied: “He made more money than I’ll ever make in this sport. So probably sit his ass down too.”

Lewis added that if he was in McGregor’s shoes he would step away from MMA because it was not worth the risk.

“I know I would,” he added.

“He made life-changing money. He really doesn’t have to fight. I’m fighting just so I can take care of my family. I don’t fight just because I love it just that much. I’m fighting just because it’s a job for me.”

Lewis knocked out Alexander Volkov with 11 seconds left in their thrilling fight and now has his sights set on a heavyweight title fight with Daniel Cormier.
