Conor McGregor: UFC star awarded key to city of Miami two years after arrest

@thenotoriousmma

Conor McGregor has been handed the key to Miami - two years after he was arrested and charged in the city for alleged strong-armed robbery and criminal mischief.

The UFC fighter was awarded the ceremonial honour by Miami mayor Francis Suarez on Wednesday.

The Irishman was arrested in March 2019 after being accused of stealing and smashing a fan’s phone outside of a hotel in Miami Beach.

The charges were later dropped after the former two-weight UFC champion settled a civil lawsuit with the alleged victim out of court.

McGregor, who has not fought since he broke his leg in his defeat to rival Dustin Poirier in January, received the key while visiting the city with his family.

The 33-year-old said: “Thank you Mayor Suarez for bestowing this great honour upon me and with my family present to witness. A very proud moment for me in my life. Thank you!

“Your hospitality and care for my family and team will be forever remembered. God Bless you and this great city! May the spirit of Miami live within us all.”

McGregor is continuing his rehabilitation since breaking his leg and his next fight in the UFC has yet to be announced.

The Irishman has been travelling the United States in recent weeks with his family and recently threw a “disastrous” first pitch at a Chicago Cubs baseball game.
