Conor McGregor UFC News: The interesting stipulation behind Notorious' return - and what it could mean

UFC President Dana White sent the internet into overdrive last night after confirming Conor McGregor's return to the Octagon.

The Notorious will headline UFC 246 against Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone on January 18 in Las Vegas.

The former Lightweight and Featherweight Champion hasn't fought since he was submitted by Khabib Nurmagomedov last year, while Cerrone this year has lost to Justin Gaethje and Tony Ferguson.

But what many fans may have missed is that the fight will reportedly take place at 170 pounds, two weight classes higher than where McGregor first made his name.

Cerrone had appeared to move back down to 155 after fighting Gaethje and Ferguson at the weight, where he once was number one contender.

But 'Cowboy' appears to want to go back to the welterweight division to fight McGregor, who is 1-1 at that weight class in his career from his two fights with Nate Diaz.

And with Nate Diaz announcing prior to his fight with Jorge Masvidal earlier this month that he was finished with the lightweight division, McGregor could be lining up for a decisive trilogy fight with his long-term rival.

Otherwise, the Notorious may have taken the bait after UFC boss White told TMZ earlier this year that the Irishman was 'too small' to face arguably the promotion's biggest active star Jorge Masvidal.

There is also a title fight in the division happening on December 14th in Las Vegas between Colby Covington and Kamaru Usman, and McGregor could be eyeing up the winner of that bout.

McGregor made history with his win over Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in 2016 when he became the first ever simultaneous two-weight world champion in New York.

And he could be looking towards becoming the first fighter ever in the promotion to win titles at three separate weight classes.

The Dubliner's return had been plunged into doubt when the UFC released their event schedule for 2020, with no sign of the comeback fight.

McGregor was submitted by bitter rival Khabib Nurmagomedov the last time he stepped into the cage, and had previously suggested he would call it a day.

But he has now set his sights on winning back his world title ahead of the fight against Cerrone, before setting his sights on a potential rematch with Nurmagomedov.
